May 2 & 3, 2009 the 22 annual Arizona Route 66 Fun Run.

The day started off with over a dozen of us meeting up at FRY's in Prescott Valley. Then we rolled out and headed up to Seligman for registration. Christy and I were number 710 of 850 cars in the show.

a href="http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2568182750039293365CKKyjC">img src="http://inlinethumb49.webshots.com/33456/2568182750039293365S600x600Q85.jpg" alt="04.30.09 016">/a>

After registering we cruised up and down Rt. 66 in Seligman. The snow cap diner had their car from CARS the movie cruising up and down the road as well. They even had the eyes painted on the windshield.

Our parade of cars left Seligman and traveled west on Historic Route 66, a designated Arizona Scenic Road, through the Grand Canyon Caverns area, Peach Springs, Truxton, Valentine, Hackberry and Valle Vista before reaching Kingman. We stopped at some of the smaller towns along the way. As far as you could see in front and in back were lines of cars all enjoying their time on the mother road.

a href="http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2010335620039293365IKSPPy">img src="http://inlinethumb46.webshots.com/43693/2010335620039293365S600x600Q85.jpg" alt="04.30.09 054">/a>

Along the way, each area adds a different touch to the celebration: Native American dances, barbecues, souvenirs, scenic vistas and historical buildings. The Show-N-Shine in Kingman gives you a chance to enjoy viewing all the vehicles that are proudly displayed. Day-long festivities carry into the evening for music, street dance and cruise night.

The show reserved 6 blocks east to west and 3 block north to south. All the show cars were parked on both sides of the streets and the overflow was parked parallel down the turn lanes.
There was everything from a 1911 Caddy to a new Diablo and everything in between. Once we got into Kingman the show & shine consumed all of downtown.

After the show & shine it was dinner at the local Sonic. There has been an "unofficial" burn out display at that Sonic for several years running. So this year I brought a spare set of donated wheels & tires specifically for this.

Well this year our rat rod was the talk of the town. The tires I had were old and hard rubber. They made tons of smoke and lots of noise. People heard me and saw my tire smoke from a couple blocks away. I even had a local police man comment on my burn out. He was there watching.
I thought I was going to get in trouble with the local fuzz but he has watched the burn out display for the last couple years.

Anyway people were saying that this was the best burn out they have seen in years. I left some nice snake marks with thick burnt rubber.

After that we went back to the hotel (across the street) and sat in front of our room shooting the breeze. My truck still smelled of tire smoke well into the night. People would walk by and point at the truck and say that was the one that did that sweet burn out. One guy even yelled across the parking lot, You're my hero!"

Some of my friends from the Arizona Mazda Club joined in this run. They were a little late as they spent all evening on Friday and a good part of the day on Saturday assembling and fine tuning the turbo set up in Chris' Miatia. They made it though. Hoo-raw they are true car nuts.
Thanks guys for making it.

We sat out in the parking lot Saturday night with cell phones and my GPS calling all the hotels in town looking for a room for them. A room was found across the street from our hotel.

Sunday morning we all met up for breakfast at JB's. After breakfast we did part two of the Rt66 fun run.

Our parade of cars left Kingman, traveling through the famous Black Mountains to Oatman, for a look at the wild west.

Today, the town's one street is lined with historic buildings and board-walks. In the middle of town is the Historic Oatman Hotel, a unique, double-walled, adobe two-story building. On the weekend, locals dressed up as desperadoes stage gunfights for the camera-toting tourists.
At high noon they had a wild west reenactment gun fight of a bank robbery from the 1800's in the middle of the street.

The wild burros that roam the streets are descendants of the working mules from the old mining days.

After Oatman we continued on the journey. Historic Route 66 is designated a Scenic Back Country Byway, and winds down to the edge of the Colorado River and the Arizona/California border. The town of Topock- Golden Shores, nestled on Arizona's side of the Colorado River, hosts the Awards Ceremony and Farewell Reception
